He is projected in the front of the room and students each have a laptop running <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/turtleart.org\" target=\"_blank\">Turtle Art<\/a>. The instructions for each of the triangle\u2019s sides were conceptually grouped by the time she shared her approach with the class.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a little coaxing from me, the student began seeing that&nbsp;FORWARD 100 FORWARD 100&nbsp;could be simplified as&nbsp;FORWARD 200.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seeing&nbsp;RIGHT 100 RIGHT 100&nbsp;three times was more difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A nice feature of the Web-based version of Turtle Art is that you can watcht the silly turtle turning\/spinning a lot and tiring itself out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other students saw a pattern that led to the creation of<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>REPEAT 3 [FORWARD 100 RIGHT 600]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The use of RIGHT 600 was selected&nbsp;<em>after<\/em>&nbsp;I asked students \u201cShould the turtle turn less than or more than 90?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, there was a tepid consensus that the turn should be greater than that for a square.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then I asked, \u201cWhat number do you think the turn will then be less than?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few students reported, \u201c180,\u201d because that\u2019s a U-Turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stager.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-18-at-12.02.18-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"454\" height=\"304\" src=\"http:\/\/stager.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-18-at-12.02.18-PM.png\" alt=\"Diagram\n\nDescription automatically generated\" class=\"wp-image-5908\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stager.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-18-at-12.02.18-PM.png 454w, https:\/\/stager.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-18-at-12.02.18-PM-300x201.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"An interesting way to make a triangle\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/514037233?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"1130\" height=\"720\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>Screencast recreation of the student&#8217;s Turtle Art program<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I suspect that a turn of 600, a multiple of 120 greater than 360 (a full rotation), is a concept that will remain elusive for some time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: Despite turning the turtle right, the repeated turns cause the triangle to draw to the left of the initial starting position and orientation.
