{"id":41,"date":"2007-09-13T06:07:00","date_gmt":"2007-09-13T11:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stager.tv\/?p=41"},"modified":"2020-07-25T19:06:22","modified_gmt":"2020-07-26T00:06:22","slug":"animoto-looks-ok-less-filling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stager.tv\/?p=41","title":{"rendered":"Animoto: Looks OK, Less Filling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OK, once again I&#8217;ll be the skunk at the garden party.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of people, including <a href=\"davidwarlick.com\/2cents\/\">David Warlick<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.speedofcreativity.org\/2007\/09\/12\/entroute-to-shanghai\/\">Wes Fryer<\/a>, are all sorts of excited about the latest web-based tool, <a href=\"https:\/\/animoto.com\/\">Animoto<\/a>. Animoto takes a pile of digital images, runs them through a seizure-inducing random sequence of transitions and cheesy late-night television infomercial video effects and places a generic &#8220;techno&#8221; soundtrack underneath. With the click of the mouse you have created an incredibly annoying piece of content-free eye-candy. Voila!<\/p>\n<p>Animoto is undoubtedly a cool piece of programming, but my head will explode if someone tells me that it has educational value (you know because it has everything &#8211; 1) It&#8217;s easy 2) It&#8217;s free and 3) It&#8217;s on the Web.) Neil Postman (author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&#038;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FAmusing-Ourselves-Death-Discourse-Business%2Fdp%2F014303653X%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1189682477%26sr%3D8-1&#038;tag=resourcesforprog&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325\">Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business<\/a>) must be rolling over in his grave.<\/p>\n<p>The power of digital video is in democratizing publishing and providing a potentially infinite audience for your thoughts. It&#8217;s a medium newly available to layfolks. Eliminating the learner and learning from the creative process, just because you can, worries me.<\/p>\n<p>David Warlick&#8217;s post about Animoto offers some caution about the tool&#8217;s appropriate use, but then he goes on to suggest that his daughter use it &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/davidwarlick.com\/2cents\/2007\/09\/12\/animoto-easily-rocks\/\">to get attention \u2014 generate some curriosity<\/a> (sic).&#8221; Will 30 seconds of video really help? Why must we be entertained at all times? How much time should a teacher spend setting up the classroom hardware so that the &#8220;lesson&#8221; may be opened up with an Animoto video?<\/p>\n<p>Animoto lets you create meaningless PowerPoint-like slideshows without all of that pesky, editing, creativity or thinking. I won&#8217;t even mention the discipline, knowledge and sense of history required of artistic expression. Did I mention that Animoto is easy, free and on the web?<\/p>\n<p>Hey, maybe I&#8217;m wrong. The Animoto web site tells me that Steven Seagal is a user.<br \/><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stager.org\/blog\/uploaded_images\/Picture-5-786942.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stager.org\/blog\/uploaded_images\/Picture-5-786940.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OK, once again I&#8217;ll be the skunk at the garden party.
