Several people, including myself felt compelled to explain who Meier and Ravitch are to Will&#8217;s readers.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, I contributed the following&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You owe it to yourselves to read Meier\u2019s seminal works, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&#038;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FPower-Their-Ideas-Lessons-America%2Fdp%2F0807031135%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1205078606%26sr%3D1-1&#038;tag=resourcesforprog&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325\">The Power of Their Ideas: Lessons for America from a Small School in Harlem<\/a>\u201d (1995) and \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&#038;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FSchools-We-Trust-Communities-tandardization%2Fdp%2F0807031518%2F&#038;tag=resourcesforprog&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325\">In Schools We Trust: Creating Communities of Learning in an Era of Testing and Standardization<\/a>.\u201d In most countries it would be assumed that every teacher has read a Macarthur Genius like Deborah Meier.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ravitch worked for President Bush 41 as Assistant Secretary of Education and works for the Hoover and Brookings Institutes. Despite her right-wing background, she is rational and thoughtful. She has been smeared and attacked repeatedly by the Bloomberg\/Klein junta. Dr. Ravtich has demonstrated courage, integrity and an admirable capacity for growth. Her book, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&#038;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FLanguage-Police-Pressure-Restrict-Students%2Fdp%2F1400030641%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1205078820%26sr%3D1-1&#038;tag=resourcesforprog&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325\">The Language Police: How Pressure Groups Restrict What Students Learn<\/a>,\u201d is a great read.<\/p>\n<p>Those two women are the type of speakers every confrence should feature. Their expertise is awesome, accomplishments great and ideas are timeless.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I have long admired Deborah Meier and Diane Ravitch and have recommended their books to my magazine readership, graduate students and friends.<\/p>\n<p>I wrote about Ravitch&#8217;s book in a 2003 article, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/districtadministration.ccsct.com\/page.cfm?p=425\">The End of Textbooks<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>My interview with Deborah Meier was published in 2002 and may be read here, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/districtadministration.ccsct.com\/\/page.cfm?id=258\">The Power of Her Ideas<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The more I think about it, the more I believe the point I made about American educators&#8217; awareness (or lack thereof) of powerful ideas is important. Why hasn&#8217;t every American educator read Meier, Kohl, Dewey, Holt, Papert, Sizer, etc?<br \/><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/digilander.libero.it\/maggioref\/200%20lire%20montessori.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px;\" src=\"http:\/\/digilander.libero.it\/maggioref\/200%20lire%20montessori.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>Until the recent adoption of the Euro, Italy&#8217;s currency featured educator Maria Montessori.
