We&#8217;ve Been Expecting You!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least 1,500 times a day I read something on LinkedIn that enrages me. (good news for the algorithm) A major source of ire comes from educators declaring an epiphany about how one might improve schools. My outrage stems from the banality of these humble brags signifying sudden clarity or insight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More often than not, my first thought is, \u201cHow is it possible that they are just discovering this when John Dewey, Seymour Papert, Deborah Meier, Carla Rinaldi, Loris Malaguzzi, Rabindranath Tagore, Eleanor Duckworth, Linda Darling-Hammond, Bev Bos, Herb Kohl, Jonathan Kozol, John Goodlad, A.S. Neill, Neil Postman, Maria Montessori, Plato, Angelo Patri, David Hawkins, Lillian Weber, Chris Lehmann, and countless others did\/wrote\/said\/taught us <strong><em>that<\/em><\/strong> already \u2013 often with great fanfare?\u201d Many of the \u201cnew\u201d ideas you unearthed should have been covered in your first teacher education class.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stager.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Our-Teachers.001.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"http:\/\/stager.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Our-Teachers.001-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6675\" style=\"width:708px;height:auto\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stager.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Our-Teachers.001-1024x576.png 1024w, http:\/\/stager.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Our-Teachers.001-300x169.png 300w, http:\/\/stager.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Our-Teachers.001-768x432.png 768w, http:\/\/stager.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Our-Teachers.001-1536x864.png 1536w, http:\/\/stager.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Our-Teachers.001.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">We Stand on the Shoulders of Giants<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, my anger, frustration, and chagrin were tempered by a sudden realization of my own. In fact, the repeated \u201cdiscovery\u201d of what already exists is validation of a theory central to my life\u2019s work. Perhaps the umpteenth \u201cwhy don\u2019t schools do X?\u201d posts <strong>should not be seen as a demonstration of ignorance, but evidence of learning.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My educational praxis is framed by the Piagetian notion that \u201cknowledge is a consequence of experience\u201d and Seymour Papert\u2019s theory of constructionism \u2014 that learning is best realized through the act of a learner making something sharable, not as a result of being taught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A colleague\u2019s sudden discovery of readily available knowledge proves the fallibility of instruction, not just weak or poor instruction, but all instruction. Schools and society-at-large overvalue instruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jean Piaget had a fancy theoretical name for this phenomenon: genetic epistemology. A simple definition is that all knowledge is constructed, reconstructed, reinvented \u2014 learned \u2014 by the learner. Genetic epistemology explains how otherwise intelligent educators can suddenly realize that students need more play, or discover the value of project-based learning and arts education, or recognize the deleterious effects of grades, bells, age segregation, early start times, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personal exasperation with such overdue \u201cdiscoveries\u201d is not unlike a teacher\u2019s frustration that \u201cWe teach them, and we teach them, and we teach them, but they don\u2019t stay taught.\u201d You can lead a horse to water, but you can\u2019t make it drink. Indeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Genetic epistemology explains why you can lead a school principal to a TED Talk, but they still run their school the same old way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the lingering question is, given that nearly every problem in education has been solved somewhere and often well documented, why is it that the system does not seem to get smarter, or evolve?<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stager.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Extending-Grace-to-Educational-Progress.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"229\" src=\"https:\/\/stager.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Extending-Grace-to-Educational-Progress-1024x229.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7792\" style=\"width:711px;height:auto\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stager.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Extending-Grace-to-Educational-Progress-1024x229.png 1024w, http:\/\/stager.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Extending-Grace-to-Educational-Progress-300x67.png 300w, http:\/\/stager.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Extending-Grace-to-Educational-Progress-765x171.png 765w, http:\/\/stager.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Extending-Grace-to-Educational-Progress-1536x343.png 1536w, http:\/\/stager.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Extending-Grace-to-Educational-Progress-2048x458.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ll conclude by dispensing a bit of wisdom that you will likely ignore until you invent it yourself \u2014 \u201cLess us, more them!\u201d Whenever an educator or parent feels the need to intervene in a teachable moment, it is worth asking the question, \u201cIs there less that I can do and more that they can do?\u201d That shift in agency to the learner increases the likelihood of learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Extending grace to even the most shameless, click-chasing, chin-scratching social media oracles baring their vulnerability by pondering great educational mysteries solved long ago not only is a form of tolerance but should also <em>serve<\/em> as a reminder to <em>them<\/em> that while an educator can improve the conditions for learning, it is the learner who learns \u2014 and at their own pace.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At least 1,500 times a day I read something on LinkedIn that enrages me.
