{"id":7280,"date":"2024-06-05T04:56:44","date_gmt":"2024-06-05T09:56:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stager.tv\/?p=7280"},"modified":"2024-06-05T04:56:47","modified_gmt":"2024-06-05T09:56:47","slug":"profiles-in-educational-leadership-episode-1492","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/stager.tv\/?p=7280","title":{"rendered":"Profiles in Educational Leadership Episode #1492"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>An Idaho school district banned ten books, including  a graphic novel edition of Margaret Atwood&#8217;s book, <em>A Handmaid&#8217;s Tale<\/em>, because book banning is all the rage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2024\/06\/04\/handmaids-tale-idaho-graduation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A graduating honors student in the censorious school district attempted to hand the Superintendent of Schools a copy of the book as a gift in a generous trade for her diploma.<\/a> The young woman has been heavily involved in reading and the community&#8217;s libraries for many years. She was even recognized for her service to the library.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"High School Grad Gives Banned Book to School Superintendent\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OOVNMV9BOW8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When the student attempted to hand the Superintendent the book, the humorless &#8220;educator&#8221; displayed zero grace, crossed his arms, and refused to accept the gift. So, the young lady placed the book at his feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>But wait! There&#8217;s more! <br><\/em><br>The district spokeswoman had the chutzpah to pile on&#8230; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trying to hand the superintendent a copy of the graphic novel, she added,\u201covershadowed the celebratory occasion for the Class of 2024, its graduates, and all their accomplishments as students, as a school, and as a district.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile we respect the right to voice concerns, it is important to maintain the focus on the achievements and hard work of our students during such significant milestones,\u201d Scheppers wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n<cite>District spokeswoman<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, boo hoo! Saying, &#8220;thank you,&#8221; would have sufficed. Aren&#8217;t you glad they have a comms team?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m terribly sorry that Superintendent Derek Bub was unable to pursue his first three job preferences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prison guard<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dog trainer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>TSA screener<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>and had to settle for Superintendent of Schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did I mention that this all happened at a performing arts magnet school?
