{"id":5687,"date":"2020-08-24T19:17:43","date_gmt":"2020-08-25T00:17:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stager.tv\/?p=5687"},"modified":"2020-08-24T19:25:11","modified_gmt":"2020-08-25T00:25:11","slug":"i-love-teachers-thats-why-im-alarmed-by-bitmoji-mania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/stager.tv\/?p=5687","title":{"rendered":"I Love Teachers, That\u2019s Why I\u2019m Alarmed by Bitmoji Mania"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"508\" class=\"wp-image-5689\" src=\"http:\/\/stager.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/SuperStock_486-418-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stager.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/SuperStock_486-418-1.jpg 640w, http:\/\/stager.tv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/SuperStock_486-418-1-300x238.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>For nearly forty years, the education community has been stumped by the seemingly insurmountable challenge of \u201cgetting teachers to use technology.\u201d Generational change, ease-of-use, increasing access, and the remarkable power of computation have been no match for, \u201cI don\u2019t wanna.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>If one doesn\u2019t care to differentiate between the various forms and nutritional value of \u201ceducational technology,\u201d it might be easy to celebrate how a lethal global pandemic is \u201cgetting teachers to use technology at long last. Just don\u2019t look too closely.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>500,000 educators responded heroically to the chaos caused by COVID-19 by joining the Bitmoji Classroom Facebook group. This benefits no one. Coloring rarely results in systemic change. Such nostalgic representations of a teacher standing at the front of the classroom in front of a handwriting chart, holding an apple, with propagandistic slogans, rules, and standards on the \u201cwalls\u201d are more than capitulation or timewasting. They are evidence of a failure to seize the moment to create modern, humane, and learner-centered educational experiences \u2013 to realize our dreams.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The bitmoji classroom is not just a way for an over-stressed teacher to blow-off steam, or a way to reduce the trauma of students being taught remotely, or communicate with parents. It is a reenactment of Our Gang\u2019s Miss. Crabtree, a desperate self-parody, a\u00a0<em>Make Schools Great Again<\/em> hat\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Worst of all, prioritizing classroom d\u00e9cor, real or virtual, is condescending, sexist, and an insult to the intelligence, creativity, and competence of teachers. This infantilizes teachers and resets the system to its default settings, compliance and standardization. Imagine the other things a half million teachers could be doing or learning.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-vivid-red-background-color has-vivid-red-color\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><em>Note<\/em>: I could go on.
