{"id":558,"date":"2009-08-12T01:13:53","date_gmt":"2009-08-12T06:13:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stager.tv\/?p=558"},"modified":"2020-07-25T18:59:52","modified_gmt":"2020-07-25T23:59:52","slug":"stagers-sla-manifesto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/stager.tv\/?p=558","title":{"rendered":"Stager\u2019s SLA Manifesto"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At last January\u2019s <a title=\"Educon 2.1 site\" href=\"http:\/\/educon21.wikispaces.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Educon 2.1 Conference<\/a> I enjoyed the great privilege of serving on a panel discussion about school reform with a number of impressive educators. For eight months I have been carrying around the notes I wrote for my opening with the intent of publishing them online.<\/p>\n<p>The following list is designed to stimulate thought and dialogue. The points are made in no particular order of importance.<\/p>\n<p>I believe\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> We must not rank or sort children.<\/li>\n<li> The teachers and parents within a particular school community should make all curriculum decisions.<\/li>\n<li> Every child is entitled to a rich joyous education filled with art, music, drama, computer science, apprenticeship experiences and access to high-interest reading materials during the school day.<\/li>\n<li> Teachers must never yell at children.<\/li>\n<li> Regardless of factors outside of school \u2013 including poverty and other social pathologies \u2013 the classroom should be an oasis representing the best 6-7 hours of a child\u2019s day.<\/li>\n<li> We must not punish children for the sins of adults.<\/li>\n<li> Every child is entitled to a talented, loving, passionate professional teacher who herself continues to learn and grow in a setting free of fear or coercion.<\/li>\n<li> It is wrong to be mean to children.<\/li>\n<li> It should not be surprising when children are kind or do extraordinary work.
